Movie First Date - Survival Guide

It amazes me that so many couples choose going to the movies for their first date! I suppose going to a movie seems pretty straight-forward, I mean, we all know how to DO it, right? Well there are several "potentially awkward opportunities" when going to a first-date-movie. So lets address a few. Let's make it fun!

Potentially Awkward Moment, #1: The Ticket Line.

What do you do while you're waiting in line? It can be torture just standing there together, shuffling forward like sheep. Conversation won't seem natural because when you're waiting in line, other people are in your space. Most likely there's couples all around you holding hands. It depends on your level of interest, but most likely holding hands will not come naturally at this stage. So lets' just avoid this whole thing and agree that one of you will pick up the tickets early. Awkward moment #1, handled.

Potentially Awkward Moment, #2: The Snack Counter.

Wow no line, since you've got your tickets already. Here you can find out how flexible your date is towards something like, popcorn. Both like butter / salt? Great! If not, then agree to get separate popcorns. But if you both like the same combo, by all means, share! Have some fun and go a little crazy with the shaker toppings - try something new. Make it your goal to interact. You will know after today how your date likes their popcorn. Make sure to get something sweet, like some Skittles. You can share them later, during awkward moment #4, below.

Potentially Awkward Moment, #3: Choosing Seats.

Don't wear heels. I know me, and it's a challenge to not stumble in a dark theater even with regular shoes! Heck I stumble even with the lights on! Once you've chosen your seats you're feeling sort of "stuck" there, and this can be awkward. Now is the time to talk, quietly. Maybe comment on the theater design, the movie itself, other movies you've seen with the same actors. Try your popcorn. Find out if they're left-handed. Turn off your cell phones. Handled.

Potentially Awkward Moment, #4: The Feature

How to sit in a dark theater and actually pay attention to the movie without feeling like you're ignoring your date? Talking is not okay at the movies! Maybe there's chemistry and you're having a difficult time even concentrating on the movie. Why not engage your date: following a shocking or funny scene, you can look at them, eyes wide, and smile really big! During a boring scene transition, why not slip them some Skittles or whatever candy you're having. Don't ask them if they want any, just grab their hand and put the candy in. Smile. Don't forget to smile. Do try and pay attention to the movie as best you can, and do try and pick up on some new funny one-liners you can share later as a memory the two of you now have, sort of an inside joke that will help bond the two of you.

Take this advice in order to handle the Awkward First-Date-at-the-movies.

Have fun!
